I have some examples
a girl said :
.''Well it depends on your definition of "white"

I've seen Puerto Ricans with red hair and green eyes; Argentinians with Blonde hair and blue eyes; Spaniards with Dark hair and blue eyes.'' ( I was asked why only''white ''people have colored eyes and light hair)
a guy said:
''Whites and Latinos are different races. Believe me I know. I'm both. Welsh and English one side. Hispanic New Mexican and Native American on the other. Yes there are similarities. Like a common humanity. But also differences. You both interact differently with people for starters. Argentina also has a lot of native Argentinians too''

I think that some Americans think that people from Spain look like Mexicans. That is probably because Mexicans speak Spanish.

In America we associate Spain with Spanish with south of our border(think Mexico/Central America). Most people we(Americans) come across that are of Spanish decent are darker in color. It is rare to see someone from Spain so Americans assume that since the Spanish that live south of the border are dark the ones to the east(Europe) must be dark too. Welcome to the American stereotype.

For the same reason that half of us don't know that New Mexico is part of the United States and that Puerto Ricans and Mexicans are not the same thing. Our schools don't spend enough time on this stuff because they think we need to know how to sew for real life.

Because Americans are ignorant (and stupid), and they have the "America and the rest of the world" mentality.
