Vasco Da Gama was the first european who sailed to India. This sea route openned doors for various european countries - France, Portugal, Britain, etc.

Howeverr, while talking about discovery of India, Indian history dates back to more than 7000 B.C. Discovery is defined as something that existed before mankind knew about it. And people lived in India, knew about India, Traded with India through land, a hell lot of yeaers before Vasco Da Gama was here. So your question is not about discovery of India, but about discovery of sea route from europe to India.

All the best...

:-)

from an european point of view:

vasco da gama found the sea route to india in 1498
(since the land route was blocked by arabs and europe needed spices etc from the far east without paying extra money to the arabs)
later the dutch took over with some trading posts also the french but finally it was the british
after the seven years war france was weak.

btw referring to other replies: columbus did not discover india ;)

Sadly, it was an ancestor of mine, sahib Rene Vasquez. According to family records , sahib Rene was working on the ports of BOMBAY in 1438. One day, he saw a ship approaching. You see, sahib Rene was known to engage in shady deals with just about anyone. Well, when the ship docked, 'ole sahib Rene asked if they needed someone to watch the ship while the captain and his crew went ashore. They said yes, thanked sahib Rene profusely, and left. 'Ole sahib Rene took the ship and sold it! The captain and his crew vowed not to leave India,[ this was a British ship] until sahib Rene either returned the ship or someone payed them for it. And that's how the British came to India! That's the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
