I'm an adult and I still fall on my a** in mine.

Get your kid to put them on inside in the kitchen or somewhere else there's smooth floors and something to grab onto. Then have them grip their way along holding the counter tops or table top until they get the feel for how to balance and hold their feet and etc. Eventually they will get the hang of pushing off, gliding, stopping and etc.

Also, here's the Heely's website which gives tips on how to learn.

A lot of newcomers don't understand how to properly stand at first. The feet aren't exactly side by side but one kinda in front of the other. Try having him put the left foot in front, then the right, just to see which he's more comforable with. I can do both, trust me, this method will help. Look at different pictures of people that roll. Try heelys.com and find the videos/commercials and watch the people on them.
