More people speak chinese as a native tongue than any other language.

There are two main dialects of chinese, mandarin and cantonese. Mandarin is the most common dialect, though speakers of one, I am told, have difficulty understanding speakers of the other. Still, mandarin chinese is the most common native tongue (900 million). Hindi is second, english is third.

However, english is spoken by more people than any other language. The Reader's Digest numbers another responder cited must be in error. There are 300 million people in the US alone who speak english. Then there is Canada, Australia, and the UK. Much of india, china, japan, europe, central america, and south america speak english as a second language.

There may be more people who speak english in india than in all western countries combined.

Sorry, your answer is wrong.
English, is the main and most compulsory language all around the world.
In asian countries, everyone there has to learn english because it's the primary language in the world.
If people want to migrate to a western country, they HAVE to learn english. And in Australia, to get a citizenship, you have to pass a national english test or you won't be counted as an australian.

Indians speak english, chinese speak english, tamils speak english, english speak english.

It's the primary language in the world.
Without english we don't know how to communicate to foreigners.
