I don't know how you don't have songs on your computer because if you don't have songs in iTunes they will be erased from you iPod. In other words you MUST keep the songs in order for them to remain on you iPod. If you erased them to free up space download them again.

If these were songs you ripped from CDs, you have to rip them again.
If they were songs you bought from the iTunes Store, believe it or not you have to buy them again!
You should have a copy on your computer and you should back that up. Do this for the songs you buy or download. The CDs you rip are their own back-up.
