Zantetsuken is the name of Odin's sword found in (Final Fantasy) video game series.

The name is sometimes translated as "Steel-bladed sword" which is a near direct translation. Since Final Fantasy VIII however, the Japanese name has remained. A more direct translation of the kanji is "Iron-cutting sword" .

When Odin utilises this sword, it instantly kills all the player's enemies. This makes Odin a formidable ally.

In Final Fantasy VIII after a scene during a battle with Seifer in Lunatic Pandora, Odin is apparently defeated in a Zantetsuken reversal and his sword is seen being relinquished to Gilgamesh who seems rather unkeen to receive it. Gilgamesh uses the Zantetsuken in other Final Fantasy games as well.

It's an "instant kill" sword that is usually associated with the Esper, Eidolon, GF, etc. Odin. However, in FFVIII, it was also associated with Gilgamesh. However this move doesn't always kill all enemies, especially bosses, except for that whole FFVI "Doom/Death (or X-Zone) glitch." In FFVII, Gunge Lance was used during boss fights, which did a lot of damage, even late in the game.

Whether or not this sword has any realistic history, I cannot say, because I don't know, nor care.
