and transfer it onto a gift box?

You can use an inkjet printer to make a transfer, but you may also need to use some kind of acrylic medium to be the "carrier" for it to help it transfer better and not-palely and to make it stick well (for example, acrylic gel medium, acrylic wood finishes, liquid polymer clay, etc.).

(You can use regular paper though if you make the print with "toner" instead of with ink though by using a photocopier or a laser, which both use toner).

Well, you can copy the image on regular copy paper, and decoupage it on the gift box. No need for transfer paper.

You can try and use decal paper. It's located in section where the pinewood car supplies are in your craft store.
