Blood typing is based on the kinds of glycoproteins that are on the cell membrane of the red blood cell.
Type "A" blood has "A" glycoproteins.
Type "B" blood has "B" glycoproteins.
Type "O" blood has proteins, but with no attached sugars (that's what the 'glyco' means).
Blood typing is similar to other genetic traits. There are two alleles.
An individual that is homozygous for type A blood has (lets say) AA.
An individual that is homozygous for type B blood is BB
An individual that is homozygous for type O blood is OO
An indivudual that has AB blood has one allele for A and one for B.
A person can be type A blood if they are AO
A person can be type B blood if they are BO
So, if a female is type O, then she is homozygous OO.
If the male type is AB, then the offspring will be:
AO, BO (50% each).
Do a punit square.
Put O and O across the top
Put A and B down the side

Type O blood means mom has two O alleles and type AB blood means dad has one A and one B allele. The children will either be OA (type A blood) or OB (type B blood), unless they are adopted.
