Certain animals manufacture vitamin C in their bodies, but humans do not and therefore we need to ingest Vitamin C to supply our bodies with this vital nutrient. Vitamin C was first isolated in 1913 and was the first vitamin to be discovered.
If you take a synthetic form of vitamin C like ascorbic acid, it may help you at first, but in a short time will damage your DNA. You need to take natural vitamin C from once living sources as a supplement or get it from eating foods rich in Vitamin C.
The food that is highest in Vitamin C is the Camu Camu Fruit found in the rain forest. It has about 5 times as much vitamin C content as any other food known to man. Since vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, your body can tolerate huge amounts without being toxic. Linus Pauling took about 20,000 units per day.
To answer your question more directly, if you don't take Vitamin C, you will shorten your life, so indirectly by taking it you will lengthen your life by not shortening it.
For your liver to function normally, you need to ingest about 3,000 units from food or supplements. Beware of supplements claiming to be all natural because most of them contain synthetic C to maintain the potency. Do not take vitamin C pills because they all contain Magnesium Stearate that is a hydrogenated oil. About 5% of the tablets contain this and it inhibits the absorption in your body and also suppresses the immune system. Don't expect multiple vitamins to help in any way. Taking a multiple vitamin is like trying to make mud by throwing a handful of dirt into the ocean. Multiple vitamins are a joke, designed to make you think you are doing a great thing for your body.
Don't expect Vitamin C to keep you from getting colds or the flu. It does help, but only to a small extent. There are other ways to prevent colds and the flu that are much more effective.

to some point, yes it does...
Vitamin C is the most important supplement that our body needs to increase the immune system and besides optimum results are not attained from other supplements when vitamin c is not present.
taking vitamin c helps the absorbtion of other minerals far better by our body than without vit c.

vitamin C is good in preventing colds and flu, but vitamin E is better for helping the skin to prevent aging and keeping a good complexion. it should be taken as a supplement and as a skin lotion for best results.
various vitamins are good for numerous problems but not as cures, but will help prevent some things. calcium and potassium are both good for preventing and easing leg cramps.

vitamin c is mainly for your immune system. vitamin e is for your skin, but to maintain a tight face is to do facial expressions in the mirror until you feel slight discomfort.
