Honda for MPG, Cheap and reliable. Although in your price range you would be looking at 10-15 years old and at least 120,000 or more miles which makes it a little less reliable.

Maybe a better choice would be to compromise on the MPG and get a used Crown Vic P71 police cruiser. They get about 20 MPG, usually well maintained and 2-4 years old with around 100,000 highwaiy miles. Very safe, too. Just a thought.

I don't know where you live but check this out:

i would go for a older Honda or Toyota. A 1990's (1993-1995) Honda Accord or Toyota Corolla might be a good pick.

We own a 1991 Geo Metro & it averages over 40mpg. See if you can find a 3cylinder, 1.0 liter engine even in newer [1991>] models. Ours is a 2-door hatchback. If possible, have a reliable mechanic check it out!

Honda Civics are the most popular and pretty reliable - look for a used one in good condition.

Most likely a Honda of some sort. Or a Neon.

Try to find a Toyota Corolla in that price range.

used Honda Civic comes to my mind. Not sure if it can be driven in the desert sand.
