What do you think? I'm not saying that Jonah isn't a nice name, but it doesn't sound particularly strong to me. I know the story from the bible, and, yes, the man from the bible was strong... but I mean the name. Is it just me? My sister also thinks it's sounds like a "sissy name". Also, isn't it a pretty popular name nowadays? I'd appreciate your input. Thanks.

honestly, i think the name Jonah is great. but the point is..don't settle for a name that you DONT like. my hubby and i have always had a 'list' of names for babies just in case...well just in case came, and we are having #4.
and the funny thing is..all those names from before we don't like half of them anymore..so we started over.
of course you won't always agree on a name. all you can do is make a list of your favorite 10 names. and your hubby make a list of his favorite 10 names.
then...you cross out the 5 names you hate off your hubby's list, and he does the same for you...
you are left with your favorite 5 and his fav 5.
you just keep doing that...3 and 3...2 and 2.
then you compromise until you get a name that BOTH of you like, and can live with.
it does take a while and don't be surprised if you change your mind 3 or 4 times before it's all said and done.

it's always kinda stressful picking out a name even if you've done it several times lol.

I like the name Jonah - it's kind of along the lines of Isaac, Noah, Samuel to me - I don't see it as being sissy - I think of a good looking, caring, strong boy named Jonah - something to do with the story Jonah and the Whale!

I've never known anyone named Jonah. It's a masculine name I guess but I don't care for it that much. That's funny because my husband was the one who wanted a masculine boy name for our son. It seems like alot of people on here say they're naming their son Jonah. I think there are cuter names out there. (my son's name is Christian) the other boy names we liked were Griffin and Ryan.

I knew a kid name Jonah in school and he was teased all the time. People would say things like "Jonah is having a whale of a time" or "Jonah's so hungry he could eat a whale". Jo-nah-vark is another good one that was mentioned. It's also kind of a wuss sounding name. I agree - not strong sounding at all.

I agree with you about the name Jonah, but names are so personal, so you shouldn't take the opinions of strangers too seriously. It's your child (and your husband's!) so you should pick a name that you BOTH love. Don't give in - just keep searching for that one name that fits. We narrowed it down to a few names and waited until we saw our little boys to officially pick the names. Sometimes they just look like a Jonah and sometimes not ;-)

Why did he pick it? Does he like it because of the Bible story? If so have him go back and study in depth the story. Jonah of the Bible is a selfish coward who wants revenge and to disobey God, and only finally listens to God when he has exhausted all other options... not exactly something I would want to name my son after (and my kids all have Biblical names).

I think Jonah is a great name, very strong and masculine. But you and your husband have to both agree on a name.

I agree with you that the name Jonah isn't very manly sounding. I don't really like it. It does sound a little feminine to me. Plus the name is associated with bad luck for fisherman. My Dad was in the Navy and whenever anyone would come onto the boat that caused trouble they would call them "A Jonah". Same goes with fisherman.

If your husband is into biblical names how about Luke? Adam is probably like Jonah, but I have a grandson named Adam and I like it. Matthew and my favorite, Michael. Good luck with your baby and sometimes the baby names itself. I had two girls, and no girls names, but I had boy's names. Then I had 2 boys, had girls names and no boys names. Each of my children were literally named at the hospital.

Jonah is a strong and masculine name. However some people think that you shouldn't give your children names that are easily recognised as christian.
