i think the previous answerer underestimates the housing market in socal; no kidding in certain areas 2000sq. ft. condo would go for $900,000 - $1,000,000... it is freakin' ridiculous out here (socal or norcal).
in regards to the job market; it is tough unless you have a very special set of skills; i would say pick the positions you are applying to wisely and make sure you have all the skills and MORE under the positions requirements... it is always good to network with tools such as linkedIN, etc...
also, try using this website www.indeed.com; put in your zip code and you will have a big list of openings. remember to cater your answers and your resume for the company you are applying to; be enthusiastic and do your research. every manager is impressed when the candidate understands the position and can tell them what he/she can bring to the table...
if you are eager and set your mind to it, you'll find a job in no time, even in this poopy economy... good luck.

according to the prices out there I wouild be homeless If I was unemployed...on the coast like LA, SAN FRAN, SAN DIEGO etc....a house that costs 150,000 here in ohio would be 600,000 on the coast....same exact house.
