In the state of California, if your job fires you for arguing with a customer can they tell other employers who call about you why they fired you? (I got fired from Bank of America for arguing with a customer and now I wanna get a job with the city)

No they cannot do that. They can tell what your position was, how much you made, and say yes or no when the hiring employer askes would you recommend them for the position. They cannot explain why. In your interview it will come up. I would be very upfront with the fact that you did argue with the customer and explain you do understand that arguing with customers is wrong no matter the circumstance and show that you truly mean what you say. Either way, good luck on the job quest.

They can say it. It's true, so you could sue to your hearts content, but you would lose.

Safe: Jimmy was fired for arguing with a customer.

Unsafe: Jimmy was a rude guy so we fired him.

You can still get unemployment. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure it's against the law for them to say why, but they can say you were fired. Either way it doesn't look good.
