Hello. My name is Kristen . I'm 16 years old. I am currently looking into college info. I want to go to college for Corporate Law. And become a Lawyer. I don't know much about it. Many of my family members never went to college, but they are supporting me all the way. I know the colleges I want to check into it is just that I'm not sure if I'm going the right way. I would love to go to Harvard School Of Law, Yale, or Stanford. I know I have to get applications to them, but I'm not sure if I will have all the things I need to do to get into one of them . I have the money it is just I don't know what to do at all. My one teacher told me that I have to do Volunteer work for the community and all this other stuff but then my grandmother told me that I don't . Will someone please help me. I would really appreciate it. Thank You.

Sincerely ,

Kristen

ok, you dont just apply to lawschool straight out of highschool.

you apply to college. you study whatever major interests you most, because law schools dont require a specific major (just make sure its legitimate (not basket weaving).

do you BEST while in college. you want strong numbers, so make your grades a priority.

but you have to have a social life too. law schools love to see community involvement. i was in a sorority and through that was able to do all sorts of fund raising events...even founding some of my own projects. law schools love to see leadership ability.

being well rounded is key. but for schools like yale and harvard you have to REALLY stand out. be REALLY involved. i have a friend who went to princeton undergrad and couldnt get into the law school. (just to give you an idea of how dedicated you need to be going into college)

hope this helps!

Kristen,
When applying for this type of school, your GPA will be the first question. 100,000 people will be applying for 1500 spots. (the numbers are not exact but you get the idea). What makes you stand out is a "Resume" of your high school years. What can you bring to society as a graduate of that university? Student government helps. Also, volunteer for a political campaign, your city chamber of commerce has activities and chances for you to be mentored by a local leader. Contact the chamber and find out about ways you can participate.
The institutions you are looking into are looking for future leaders and the best candidates to become America's leaders (and alumni donors).
So think of the next couple of years as building for a job interview to the college of your choice. Start thinking of ways that you will able to show that you will become the kind of graduate that the institution would want their name associated with. When applying it helps to attach a written business plan based on your graduation from that school. Include a detailed plan with where you see yourself 1 year, 3 years, 5 years and 10 years after successful completion of school.

Just remember when applying - the school is thinking What's in it for us? What do you bring? What can you do for them?

I usually don't say grandma's are wrong, but this time the world has changed.

1) Get a GPA of no lower that a 4.0 you should shoot for higher.

2) Do not score lower than a 2200 on the SAT

3) You can not go to law school right out of high school. You must study law... then after you major in your field in college you graduate and take a test I think it is called the LSAT. Or I might have miked it up with another one.

4) Nonetheless, you must score HIGH on this test to go to law school. Then you will eventually end up at a law school (hopefully one of the ones you mentioned) then you must pass the Barr exam.

5) Get ALOT of letters or recomendation

6) Do ALOT of volunteer work and make sure you balance it with accademics.

&) Always have a back up plan if this should not work out.

Good luck to you. And remember this ...

"Shoot for the moon and even if you miss you'll land amongst the stars".

Never let anyone tell you you cant do all of this and more. Always have goals, always keep dreaming.

From my perspective it seems like you haven't tailored yourself into those elite colleges.. getting into harvard yale and stanford is tough.. thats an understatement.. its insane I would lower my expectations of going to law school as an undergrad as you have stated money isnt a concern so

i suggest going to a college you'll like with a favorable major then just attend law school from there

again harvard, yale and stanford undergrads are pretty much genuises if you're still asking what they're asking for you probably dont have the big idea of how selective they are

remember that you will be applying in a sea of other smart kids. so the more you can do to make yourself stand out and seem cooler, the better. be it great grades, awesome recomendations, after school jobs, volunteering, school government, the school paper, performing, sports, other hobbies, talents, whatever, the more you do the better and more interesting a candidate you will be! good luck!
