I have an external hard drive and when I try to copy a file over to my local drive it will start and show say 2 minutes left. However the copying time progressively gets larger till it hits 197 minutes and then it completely stalls and it won't copy the file over.

Whats wrong with my external drive and how do I fix it?

Try to right click the file and select copy. then go to where you want the file and paist it.

What does the drive show up as when you right click start and explore? is it a USB external? Try the control panel then system device manager, go to the USB and look for the Mass storage device, then update driver?? uninstall it and reboot??

maybe your external hard drive has one or more sectors that cannot be read or the file you want to copy is damaged. try to copy another file and see what happens

I had before this problem with some Cd's.
