basically it comes down to gearing and torque. HP is irrelevant except for a comaritive term. The shorter the gears the quicker the rear tires turn. For instance a 3:08 rear is great for highway cruising, but you need more torque ( power)
to do a burn out than with a 4:11 gearing.

With a manual, all you gotta do is rev the engine to enough RPM's and pop the clutch or power shift. Rear end is less relevant.

Andy ( right above me) thinks a neutral drop is a good idea, its not!

I have seen 3 1/2 hp engines spin the tire of a go cart for a short distance. Then I have had cars pushing 500 hp that would stretch rubber and smoke like **ll

Well that depends on the ride really, you can do it with a 50cc motorbike which is like 3bhp. FWD cars spin easier there for u need less HP. anything from a 1.6 upwards should do the trick. automatic cars mmm, dont really know but it depends on the gearing. more power = more smoke heehaaa he he

well heres a 3cyl geo metro burnout... so 55hp should be sufficient

of course you can do a burnout in an auto... stick it in neutral, give it some gas, pop it into drive.
i had a friend with an automatic ford probe, and he had the tranny level 10'd, he could smoke the tires in 1-3 gear.
there are some videos on http://www.probetalk.com

horsepower and transmission are not the factors here , lack of traction is , if you have front wheel drive use your e-brake , while stopped , and punch it , rwd you may want to wet the tires first , crappy old tires with no tread inflated to the maximum # printed on the sidewall will help too , or so I've been told : )

its not only the horse power but the gear ratio...the higher the gear ratio the faster the wheels turn in first gear

too many variables. my mustang(auto) only makes about 250hp and will fry the tires off. but my drag car makes 1100hp. i can launch it at full bore and she hooks and books.
