the size of the chip tells nothing. Look for higher clock speed (333 is better than 266) and lower latency (60 ns is better than 70 ns). Much depends, however, on what your motherboard supports with its current CPU.

For expansion purposes, 1x512 can be better because you won't rist having to pull something out if you decide to go to 1G or 2G, later

performance wise 2*256 and 1*512 are same,
but if u use 1*512 u will have option of still upgrading as you will have slots left,
but 2*256 is also having an advantage if by chance one ram fails, then u can work with another
1*512 is cost effective, means it is cheaper,

512 MB is still best as compared to 2* 256, either they are the same in capacity, but a fix memory will be faster in performance as compared to a 2* 256.

In the past few years mother boards will run much faster with 2 sticks of memory. Look at the memory slots if there is no color difference. Then there will not be much speed difference. Stick with 1 512 stick. but if you see 3 memory slots 2 with the same color and one of its own color. get 2 sticks. Try to get matched pair memory. With a CAS of 2.5 or less. One must understand computers and motherboards bandwidths and channels before stating 1 big stick is better than 2 smaller sticks.

go for 2*256 mb......if u dont wanna add more aftrewards...
this is coz 2*256 will provide u with =1*512
and if by chance u get some damage in 1 of the ram then u may use other
#################3
however if u wish to add more go for 512 as it will leave u with
slots to add more ram later

now...
let's make this as painless as possible...
3+1=4
2+2=4
2*2=4
get it???
2 256's give you the same PERFORMANCE as 1 512.
HOWEVER
IT IS important to know that ONE MORE RAM SLOT WILL HAVE TO BE USED UP IN ORDER TO ACCOMODATE THIS CONFIGURATION.

***NOTE that 1 512 stick of ram will take up less room that 2 256's (ONE vs. TWO) thus giving you the edge of maybe half of a percent or two of performance NOT ON THE RAM ITSELF, but on other factors: CPU Cooling, Case Temp, etc, etc, etc.

Hope this clears that up for you,

If your computer supports dual channel, then 2 sticks in dual channel will give better performance. If not, one stick is better. Also, nowadays, 512 MB RAM is just about adequate. You would do better with 1 GB RAM, wither 2 x 512 in dual channel, or 1 x 1GB .

from my opinion 1*512 is best because one ram chip can manage easily instead of two ram chips
means 1*512 is better than 2*256.

I feel accessing the 2 Dimms for every memory access, refreshing of 2 dimms will lead to reduce the performance of memory.....
