Most retail gift cards are reloadable; you just provide the clerk with the gift card and the credit card/debit card you wish to use to load the gift card.

Restaurants, on the other hand, usually aren't reloadable (or they just won't do it).

Just check with the clerk or manager on duty if the clerk seems clueless.
