Ok heres the WHOLE story. 5 years ago I was fired for stealing something from Home Depot. To this day, I regret it, It was the only thing I have ever stolen in my life. My questions is, ever since then I have been going to school, but now I want to apply for a job but am very nervous about putting down on my application that I was let go due to taking something from the store. So what do you think? Is it on my record? Am I doomed for the rest of my life, to never get hired for a job due to this mistake in my life?

You're just lucky they didnt file a police report!!! Then it would be on your record no matter if you told them you worked at home depot or not!!
If it was 5 years ago then no youre not screwed, if they do call your prev employer (which i doubt they will, it being so long ago) its likely that the store has different managment, and i dont think they keep things like that on file anyway.
and if somehow they did find out which I think is pretty unlikely then just tell them that you were young and stupid and it was a first time (and last time) thing and you learned a huge lesson from it!

also, you could leave that job off your resume if it was only for a short period of time. If it was over 6 mos that u worked there then i wouldnt omit it just because they often ask why there was a gap between jobs.... but that all depends on how young you are too.

i think youre worrying more than you have to.
dont let anyone make you feel guilty about it either. You regret doing it and that's good enough.

Have you ever heard this adage "Honesty is the best policy"?
We all have made mistakes in life. Have you made restitution? Some people would pay the offended party
2-4 times the value of the item that was tried to be stolen.
Have you donated anything to charity to make up for this?
When in the interview be proactive. It is better to admit and forsake rather than trying to cover up. Be of good cheer, that
often employers are only interested in the past 3-5 years. So you may not have to deal with this issue unless future
employers do a background check. Even then, find out
how far back a background check goes. Best Regards!

This is a tough one. One side of me says, "certain things will follow you forever." The other side says, they'll never check back 5 years.

Did you take something of value?? Did you take something. you said you were "fired for" but DID you.

There's something about you I like-- you aren't tryng to rationalize it by saying, "They'll never find out' or, " It was only a box of pencils."

If you put a gun to my head, I'd leave it off the app, if they don't ask, fine! Ifthe app does, TELL they person, you don't know if they want you to put it down or not. Let them tell you what to do. They'll respect your honesty. I would.

just do not put home depot down as former work.
You may want to call home depot home office and see what is on your record and if they filled it or something like that.
I do not know how that works.
Just do like everyone else don't tell. but do not lie either.

Under reason for leaving be vague.. Also, do you HAVE to put that job down? I would leave it out, as if they call, they will find it out inevidably... You shouldnt have stolen, but i obviously dont need to tell you that... I would leave it out of the question!
