the Human Genome Project is trying to map and sequence the complete genome of humans, along with many other organisms. The human genome has about 3 billion base pairs, so sequencing the genome has to sequence 3 billion nucleotides. However, realize that the sequence of nucleotides alone doesn't tell you much; 90%+ of our genome is repetitive "junk" DNA, and which is more important is identifying the 20000-25000 or so genes, and finding the SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms), which make up most of the variation between human individuals.

These are the goals of said project:

* identify all the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA,
* determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA,
* store this information in databases,
* improve tools for data analysis,
* transfer related technologies to the private sector, and
* address the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise from the project.
