Quite some time back out in Jablip USA, I was ripped off at an I 80 Texaco sttn in Nebraska. "Jimbob" replaced an alternator & conscioulsy reversed the poles. On the way back we stopped, demanded our $$ back, at least for labor. He said "give me the part back." What a aschole!

I did forget to mention that the owner was on hand, & would not allow us to put in the alternator. Instead, he had Jimbob put it in. How hard izzit to put in this part? 2 Bolts, a belt, & a couple wires! At the time I was a "long haired hippy" & these cats looked like characters right out of Deliverence.

Nope, don't get apprehensive about breaking down. It will drive you insane & ruin your fun. Just have your favorite local mechanic do a pre trip inspection, get fixed what needs to be fixed, change the oil, if needed, & enjoy the adventure. When it does happen, it is extremely frustrating, but thank God for AAA & improving cell phone coverage.

People get greedy & take advantage of someone in a desperate situation. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with your car's engine, so if the inevitable happens again, you know what looks right & what doesn't. In addition, ask for warranty information up front, in case of problems down the road. If you do breakdown, it just adds to the tales you can tell when you get back home.

Even better than familiarizing your self with the car and pre inspection for a trip, learn to work on it and maintain it yourself. Then you'll save yourself big money on repair bills, can meet women broke down on the side of the road, and boost your confidence in learning alien technology ( laughing).

Just keep a small but diverse tool kit in the trunk.

Consciously reversed the poles?

Any 'Jimbob' can replace an alternator. DIY.
