This is my answer to some other question about Tesla from a a few months ago:

Actually, I don't think someone will ever come to the idea of popularizing Nikola Tesla. So far, the furthest they came was to put David Bowie to play Tesla in this year's blockbuster The Prestige.

Edison and Einstein got there first (I mean they became stars), and the world doesn't seem to popularize scientists that much, so Tesla couldn't find his spot under the stars. And, he didn't even care to become popular, he truly loved his science. It's just the way it is.

They always give credit to Edison for the discovery of electricity, but guess who did it first? It was Tesla, of course. There are so many more of his discoveries like electro-magnetic induction and stuff like that.

And what's that BS about him being antisemitic, just like you said, he was Serb, and Serbs and Jewish were on the same side during the world war 2, they were all killed or taken to those Nazi camps.

I may be a bit extreme about proving Tesla's way, but it's probably because I'm a Serbian girl.

And finally, Tesla may not be widely popular in the rest of the world, but he certainly is a star here in Serbia and in Croatia, where people appreciate what he did for the mankind.

Tesla was definitely ahead of his time and we would all know more of him today if the power companies early on had not bought up his invention where electricity could be transmitted without power lines attached, all the homes in America would be powered without a high cost to anyone, and that was but one of his inventions. He was probably the most inventive genius of our time far far ahead of Edison

Absolutely- a great example of how 'business' genius allows people with good scamming skills to steal the ideas of genuinely intelligent people... to the point that hardly anyone knows who Tesla even is!

Modern intellectual property law encourages this evil tendency, rewarding those who build 'toll gates' across the 'roads' built by those with real talent.

NIKOLA TESLA, the father of modern electricity,of Serbian orthodox origin, is one of the most famous inventors in the world.
He was born "at the stroke of midnight" with lightning striking during a summer storm. At his birth
the midwife commented, that he'll be a child of the storm, to which his mother replied, "No, of light."

Which he really was !

He had more than 700 patents in fields of electrical energy processing, thermodynamics, telegraphy, radio, radio astronomy, aviation, physics, optics, mathematics and chemistry.

His inventions:

AC induction motor,Radio Transmitter,Radio controlled Boat,
Wireless Telegraphy,Single-node Bulbs,Fluorescent Lights ,
Spark Plug,Tesla Coil,Earthquake Machine,
Magnifying Transmitter,Turbine and Pump based on Bladeless Disk design,
X-rays Tubes and many many more.

In 1943, year of his death, the US Supreme Court recognized him as the inventor of radio ( Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Marconi for radio in 1909)

These days few have heard of Tesla and his acheivements, but I think he's coming back into mainstream thought....Most don't know that he invented AC-current, remote control, and radio, amongst so many other contributions......

I'll vote for underrated. After researching him, I'd say he's a little crazy, but with how much he contributed (he wasn't called "The man who invented the 20th century" for nothing), it's a shame his isn't better known.
