I'm in the market for a ferret, and would prefer to buy a baby or relatively young adult that has not been previously owned. Any suggestions for pet stores that might carry them?

Your best bet would be to have a pet store order one in if you can't find one. then you can get any age/gender and colour. good luck

If you have Petsmarts or PetCo there they usually carry them. I am a ferret rescue in Georgia and you can actually get a very young one from rescues. Unfortunately, most people do not realize how much work they are until they get them. They usually turn them over to rescues after having them as short as 2-3 days. I am concerned about this becoming a problem as the overpopulation of dogs and cats has become. I don't want to see the animal controls filling up with ferrets and them being put to sleep because of overpopulation.

please please PLEASE!!! you have to understand that kits and adolescent ferrets are very demanding critters to take care of. they need to be litter pan trained which can be frustrating, They need to be stimulated mentally and physically a great deal ( two hours of play a day is NOT enough.) And their ferret chow, bedding, and doctor's visits add up to a fair amount of money very quickly. They get into everything you leave within their reach, take naps in laundry baskets, and drag your belongings to dark corners and ends of the earth. NOW. knowing all this and you're willing to honestly put up with it, consider adopting a ferret from a shelter. Shelter ferrets have already been abandoned by someone once. how would you like to be abandoned? if you adopt from a shelter, a ferret will know they are loved again by someone. there is honestly no reason to NOT get a shelter ferret, and there are quite a few reasons to not get one from a pet store. consider the options and consider saving someone's life. If you cant get one from a shelter, consider buying one from a private breeder. they will have made sure the ferret has the proper temperament, shots, is properly weaned, and is in great health before selling one to you. buying one from a pet store should be your last consideration. In short, mass producing ferret mills are selling to commercial pet stores; these businesses are just that. businesses out to make a profit. remember, owning a ferret isnt owning a ferret. its adopting a member of the family, never to be abandoned again. adopting a ferret shouldn't only be for your benefit but the ferret's as well.

Just a few things to consider before diving into the ''market'' of ferrets.

Just take a trip to Philadelphia and catch one of those big rats. They'll let you have it for free!
