this would depend on where the filter is located.

On some cars the filter is located near the engine on the gas line. If it is there, you just need to be quick. Generally, you can put a bolt or a plug into the gas line, and you will only waste a little fuel.

On some cars the filter is located under the body of the car, near the gas tank. This is a little more complicated because it is lower, and you cannot just lift the fuel line up. Get a bolt, and slide the tip of it in the fuel line and hold it with your thumb. If you have guessed the correct size (and always look before you do it), you should be able to have the filter replaced with out wasting to much fuel.

On some really backwards cars, I have seen the filter actually inside the fuel tank right before the fuel pump... that is a major pain in the rear to deal with.

Another thing to think about is draining the gas tank. Or pulling the filter, and letting the fuel run into some container, then replacing the filter, and refillign the vehicle.

On most vehicles there is one fuel filter that is along side of the frame rail. Since there is about 8-10 feet of fuel line you are going to get some gas spilled in this servicing. If you can hold the ends of the hose up then less will come out until you can get the new filter installed. On other vehicles it is in the gas tank itself and the chances are less on that one but you have to remove the fuel tank from the vehicle, and that is never a fun one to do. Either way if you release the pressure on the fuel lines on a fuel injected car on the fuel rail in the engined it will leak out and not spray all over you.

If it's an inline filter you can do this with minimal gas leakage. If it's in the tank you will not lose any but it's more of a job because you have to drop the gas tank to get at it. Most of the vehicles out there now have in line filter's. You shouldn't have any worries and not much spillage. Make sure you put the other one on the right way so as to not restrict the gas flow.

I use a small finely sharpened pencil to temporarily plug the lines, losing just a little gas in the proses with a drain pan under to catch any gas. you kinda gotta screw in the pencil if you know what i mean.

i don't believe so, your going to have some come out. just put a pan underneath it to catch it. you can always pull the fuse to the fuel pump and start the car till it dies to release most of the pressure.
