I used to be a big fan of their cartoons and movies as a kid back in the very early 90s. I knew they were named after major Renaissance artists but why? Why did the creators pick Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael, and Donatello? Why not Giotto, Brunelleschi, or even Caravaggio?

I fail to see the connection between the personalities of the four main characters except for Raphael. The artist considered himself to be a master at his craft as well as a master in philosophical ideas (hence the painting "School of Athens"). The ninja turtle Raphael also considers himself to be smart, witty, and sometimes sarcastic and cynical.

Can anyone shed light on this?

You are trying to go too deep into this.... the rat was a philosopher and so he gave them those names. The creators also had to pick names people would recognize (expecially kids)
