Baking soda absorbs odors very good. Sprinkle it thoroughly, let sit overnight if you can, vacuum thoroughly. Repeat as needed.
You could also use Arm&Hammer Carpet Fresh Pet Odor Remover.

Whether its a micro fabric resembling suede (like I had) or simple fabric, read on:
1. Be prepared to not let doggie BACK on the sofa after you clean it.
2. If you can remove the covers to launder, do so.
3. If you cannot remove the covers there are fabric and rug sprays which work wonders (personally I use that with a good brush to evenly saturate the area-discouraging water stain appearance)
4. Try Febreeze, although personally I haven't found it to have great staying power.
Good luck!

Rent a carpet cleaner. Most grocery stores have them near the front of the store, or home centers and hardware stores have them. They also sell supplies there. Be sure to buy a bottle of Odor Remover along with a bottle of regular cleaning fluid. It will do a great job. You can also buy just the bottle of odor remover and use it without the carpet cleaner. Still, a carpet cleaner has an attachment for upholstery and would do a nice job. Go over the couch slowly and thoroughly 2-3 times.

There are a few products out there. Fabreeze is one of them but
it has a definite smell to it We use a product from the same company that makes Skunk away and I thimk you can find it at petco. Also a good carpet cleaning co. will usually have a furniture cleaning department ,

rub baking soda or a baking soda based carpet/upholstry powder into it, wait an hour or two, and vaccum it up. Baking soda is wonderful.
another baking soda tip, as a freebie: if u r a smoker, put it in the ashtray... it eats the odor of ashes and butts, right away. my mom had a car she chain smoked in for 11 years. she put a small cup in her cupholder to use as an ashtray so she could put baking soda in it... after about 1 week, u couldn't smell ciggaretts in it AT ALL!!!! Change it when it starts to get dark grey.
