I recently left my lawn mower running in my garage and it got me wondering. How long does one have to breath condensed carbon monoxide before death occures? Assuming you fll asleep in an enclosed garage with a car running, how long until it's too late? Does it take hours or minutes or what? No I'm not suicidal, just curious because my brother once fell asleep drunk in his car after he just parked it in the garage. My dad woke up and heard the car running and saved him. I have always been curious just how close to death he really was.

500ppm CO in the air is fatal... that's 1/20th of 1% of your air.... that ain't much! Keep in mind too a car has a catalytic converter which eliminates all but 1% or so of CO. A lawnmower is a different story... more output but a lot smaller combustion, all I know is that there's been times I've been changing my oil with the garage closed, turn the car on to warm the oil up, and after a few minutes or so I felt dizzy and realized what was going on... so it doesn't take much..

Carbon Monoxide is a slow painful death. The fumes from the exhaust pipe inside a locked area such as a garage.will make you pass out as soon as the monoxide has expanded in your lungs. It is a horrible way to end your life. It is very painful to all the sensory organs such as your eyes ears and nose especially the throat as it closes up from the monoxide.

This question needs to be categorized under health.

This is a serious question, and it is not about mainaining a property.

Different machienes give off different levels of carbon monoxide, but that is all I am going to say because that is all I know.

With a car running in a closed garage, it would take only minutes to make you unconcious.
