If by XL you mean Microsoft Excel, you can keep the formatting. Normally, anything copied from Excel and pasted into Word will come through with whatever font and other settings it had in Excel. If you have selected only the contents of a single cell, you won't get the cell formatting (backgrounds etc.) unless select paste special => Microsoft Excel object. If you copy a block of cells, it usually defaults to pasting them as an Excel object, with all the spreadsheet formatting intact.
