I am trying to install WIndows XP on the system (I have to because it is after 30 days) and when I connect my Ethernet to my router (and sometimes modem) it says connecting and then says that it cannot connect. What can I do? I have a Netgear Router and Earthlink DSL. I cannot alter anything in my Laptop because I am immediately asked to verify the Windows with the CD Key.

Have you tried disabling the wireless radio on this laptop to see if that helps the wired connection link-up?

Good luck,

Try using a different Ethernet cable. Maybe the Ethernet cable you are trying to use has a bad connection or was terminated incorrectly and is causing connection issues.

If that doesn't work, then maybe your phone line in your house may be old and is deteriorated. Call your phone company or ISD provider and ask them to send a technician to check the wiring and to replace the phone cable inside your house (if it is bad). I had that same problem and after the technician replaced the cable, my DSL was running at full speed with no connection problems.

Last but not least, if all else fails, maybe your hardware is failing. Since you said that you've tried connecting it to a modem and router and it still doesn't work, then maybe the Ethernet card is malfunctioning or has a bad driver, which is causing the problem. Try going to your Device Manager to see if there are any problems. To do this:

1) Right-click on the My Computer icon.
2) Go to the Hardware tab in the newly opened window and click on the Device Manager button.

If there are any problems, they would be showed as yellow exclamation points or red circles. That means that the drivers are not installed or that the device has a problem. If there are any like that, get someone who knows about computers and ask them for assistance on getting drivers and troubleshooting hardware.

Hope that helps..

I had this happen with Windows2000. In the bottom right it show the computer with an x on it. In Control Panel find and open "Network and Dial-up Connections". I deleted the Computer with the x and then click on "Make a New Connection" and follow the instructions.
But, if, it ask for the Key, I not sure what you can do.

First you need to activate your Windows Xp before you can do anything else to correct this.
