In most cases, it is just the science of perception. The brain usually "smoothes out" and ignores what it can't interpret. It is a phenomenon similar to what happens when you look in the newspaper at "find six differences between these two pictures", and you can see only five. Until the sixth is pointed to you (or you read the answer, after which, every time you look, this one is the first to pop out.
A similar effect is illustrated in a video where you are asked to see what the trick is (a magician is doing something), and at the end, you are asked if you saw the huge gorilla which passed behind him.

I agree with what you're saying.
I think one reason they make such a big deal about Venus though is half the time it is up in the morning...and lets face it, most of those talking about Venus and being surprised by it probably aren't the type of people who get up early in the morning to do anything...
Either way, they are still stupid for forgetting that its been up before and that they probably asked the same question then too.

Venus is always low on the horizon after sunset or before sunrise (because Venus is closer to the sun then us) and most people don't notice it because it is usually lower then the trees, mountains, hills, or buildings that surround their home. By the time they go out to stargaze after it gets dark, Venus is likely to have set below the horizon, so it doesn't get seen as much as you might think.

Amazing, isn't it? I heard that during the great New York blackout, people were calling the police stations in fear because of all of these strange lights in the sky. They thought we were being invaded by Martians.
Yes, by all means get out a bit more. Heaven my blanket, Earth my pillow, that's my motto.

People don't look up too often, and then are confused when they do. That's why so many people report seeing UFOs the first time it occurred to them to glance up - but you never hear astronomers talking about seeing UFOs.

morning star half the year and evening star the other half.they often wonder where it went and then it's not in the west any more but it's in the east. in the west for the evening star and in the east for the morning star. How difficult is that?

Venus changes its brightness substantially, and also alternates between morning and evening visibility.
