It was Venus.
Last night, March 20th, Venus was located above and to the left of the crescent moon.
Tonight, March 21st, in North America, the moon will be above and to the right of Venus. After tonight, the moon moves away from Venus.
In Australia this evening, the moon lies directly below Venus just after sunset. In New Zealand, the two bodies have already set.

Is it near sunset where you are? If so, you're probably looking at the planet Venus.
