By being there.
When the Mayflower landed, the Indians greeting them spoke English because fishermen from a number of countries were fishing the Grand Banks and camping on the shore during the season to process the fish.
The Indians showed how a fish, planted in the mound with corn would make it grow better, so the availability of the sea was obvious. The land wasn't all that good.
They came over on boats and all the goods they needed in the early days were brought that way as well and the extra they made and shipped out. Using boats was obvious.
90% of the population lived within 50 miles of the sea in all the colonies.

Three ways.
1. The people who went there came from England and the British Isles which was a very strong sea power at the time, strongest in the world soon after the founding of Massachusetts and the other colonies.
2. By engaging in trade, fishing, whaling etc. New Englanders supplied the world with whale oil and timber, and helped fan the sparks of the Revolution.
3. The long coastline of the North American Eastern seaboard has always drawn men to set rowing craft and ships onto its waters. Islands and other mainland communities are homes to yacht harbors and the activities of seagoers, recreational and professional in the months of good weather.

New England is not a good place for agriculture. The growing season is short and the soil tends to be rocky. The colonials, as with all people, turned to what was available. As it happens New England is fairly close to the Grand Banks, one of the great fishing areas of the world, now and then. New England was well positioned for ship building, raw materials were close at hand. So trade and fishing came to them naturally due to the geography of the area

transportation and food. Chesapeake bay was a very rich source of fish and without roads or railways the new colonists had few options for heavy transport aside from shipping.
