Less is expected of you if you are perceived as dumb. The whole "Dumb Blond" persona is based on this and kept alive and well even as we speak.

Not many years ago, women were not supposed to be intelligent. My mother told me I needed to find a man to support and watch over me. The only way I was going to do that was to act dumb she said.

Because geeks and other such smart people are often not respected and are made fun of. Because they seem less threatening if they appear dumb and think they can land a mate easier. Perhaps they really aren't that smart after all.

They think it's cute and it will make them popular or something. Or they're afraid of looking smarter than everybody else, so they dumb themselves down.
