When your lights are switching from one side to the other than the Xbox 360 most likely is confused as to whether the console is upright or laid on its side. The Xbox 360 has a sensor to tell how it is upright so that it may adjust its light accordingly. It doesn't seem like anything to worry about but you might as well check out any possible causes/errors:

Usually when the lights flash around in a clockwise circle that means it has low battery or a recent change in battery and has more energy than neccesary. I dont know what back and forth means though

I had this happen to me before, it's just a glitch it has in the system. Just turn the system off unplug the system and plug it back in and turn it on and it will position it's self back in place.

Good luck.
