I have a linksys WRT54G wireless router and ever since I've been using it occasionally it will cut out and I'll have to go and manually unplug and replug in the router to reset it which fixes the problem. I updated the firmware put it hasn't helped. What other things should I do to fix this problem?

Unfortunately, this is typical Linksys router behavior.

They were never able to figure out why this happens on their older equipment.

Luckily, there is an open source version of the firmware available that is said to be significantly improved over the tripe from Linksys. See here:

for more details.

Good luck,

Do you have any security on it? I would recommend you to do the following:

change the SSID, this is the first thing you should do

use atleast WEP security

Change the channel... by default most of the routers use channel 11, use 8 or 6 try different ones.. play around and you would better understand and will get the best channel for your environment..

change the default password on the router

change the IP subnet (optional) only if you know what IP subnet is..

All the best...

Wifi does that. The very nature of wifi is unstable. It also could be the placement of the router & what the signal has to go through to reach your pc's network card. It also could be the network card is the one dropping the signal periodically.

This link is for reviews of your router & it has quite a few folks commenting on the loss of signal.
