If a mealworm is red does that mean its dying or in pupa stage?

My mealworm is red and is weird looking.

The healthy state of a pupa is white then darkening just before the beetle emerges. Discoloration is not a good sign.

It's in the pupa stage. Pupae can still move a little, though they can't walk.
