thank you, when i saw your question i thought i'd be pissed but i realized i was jumping to conclusions.
my dad is a retired airline pilot (forcibly retired, though thankfully before 9/11) and had to come out of retirement a few years ago after the post 9/11 stock market crash (my family lost a major amount of money because of that) to help pay for my college and day to day living expenses. he now drives a truck to earn money. hes over 70 years old and im grateful as hell for him doing this. he should not be working at this age unless he wants to.
my brother, also an airline pilot, lost his job because of 9/11. he had a 3 year old daughter and a 4 month old son at the time, and no job. he got his CDL and started driving a truck to put food on his family's table. he has since gotten a new job with the airlines, but he is one of the fortunate few.
so the next time you see a trucker and think "redneck, pervert, whatever," stop yourself. you have NO IDEA how many people driving those trucks are doing so because because of what those terrorists did on 9/11. keep that in mind next time you see one on the road.

I feel bad that truck drivers have to put up with regular drivers on the road. They are just doing their job but they cant seem to even switch a lane anymore because someone will put their little jap car right in the way so they dont have to wait behind "the truck". Most people dont understand that behind a big truck is a safe place to be. They cannon stop fast so if you are behind them and they hit the breaks, if your paying attention you'll still be able to stop in time. And on the other end idiot drivers will cut off big trucks, do they know the breaking distances for big trucks is huge!! I'm from California so I have a big problem with bad drivers! Can you tell?

I agree that the economy depends on them. But I wouldn't call them family men, if they are on the road, away from their families for 90% of the time or more. Its a tough life. Since not many people want to do that kind of work and there are many companies competing for reliable drivers, the pay is solid. I don't think it requires a great deal of education, but you can make a decent living if you are good at it. The job includes not only driving, but verifying load quantities on boxes, pallets, etc. and also maintaining reliable paper work in the case anything may go wrong.

My best friend's dad is a truck driver and he is anything but those stereotypes. He isn't crazy, he doesn't smell bad, he's family has NO problems, and he is super nice. Stereotypes about truck driver are just like any other stereotype. Yea some truck drivers probably are like what you explained, but a majority aren't. They are hard working and deserve to be recognized for that.

I know a couple truckers personally and they aren't bad because they don't do the long hauls. They do routes during the day and are home at night. Some of the guys who live out of their trucks are different. I think the life on the road without any companionship could do that to a person.

I am very proud my husband is a truck driver-long hours-self sacrifice-little home time. They are taken for granted and it is so sad beause it is a respectable profession. Unfortunatly not all drivers are professionals or respectable.

I agree that they are sterotyped. Some of them are very hard working family men who just do their job to provide for their families.
