That is a normal function of laptop computers. After you unplug the external power source, laptops automatically revert to the lowest power settings to conserve battery power. I doubt if there's any problem with your battery. To brighten your screen, look for a button on your keyboard with the letters "fn" and another button that looks like a blue sun (there should be two of them, one with an up arrow and another with the down arrow). Hold down the "fn" key and press the button that has the blue sun with an up arrow continuously until the screen is as bright as you want it.

You can follow these steps to see how much power is remaining on your battery.
1. Click the "start" button
2. Click "control panel"
3. Open "power options"
4. Click on the "power meter" tab at the top
5. If necessary, uncheck the box that says "show details for each battery"

If after you have completely charged your laptop this meter is showing low-power, then there is a problem with your battery. I strongly doubt that this will be the case. You may just need to follow the steps I listed above to brighten your screen.

I hope this helps. If necessary, feel free to contact me through my profile.

It must be some energy-saving setting in your laptop. Try looking at the manual or calling the manufacturer, they will probably be able to help you out. You may need a new battery if the life is too low.

I have a laptop also...that doesn't happen with mine. It's new, bring it back...might be as simple as a bad battery.
