Here we go again, suffering these high gas prices because some knucklehead wants to make more money than he can spend in several lifetimes and more. Is this a conspiracy against the American people. If we had alternative sources of energy, then the oil companies wouldn't have this stranglehold on everyone......

It is the law of supply and demand, with a few adjustments for government regulations.

The oil companies "re-tool" refineries (i.e. shut down) this time of year to mix different additives required by the government to fight air pollution and/or support corn farmers.

The demand is high because the US Army is running around Iraq in armored HumVees that get about 3 miles to the gallon.

The demand is high because Americans would rather drive big gas-guzzling SUVs on their own than carpool or ride public transportation.

You answered your own question Slick. People are greedy. I can tell you one thing though, gas prices will never maintain a national average of more then $3.50. Once we hit that price, the government candidates will begin discussing tapping into the oil held in slate rock out West. The prices will then drop because oil companies know that we have enough oil in those rocks to last us until after we die. Should the oil companies have to tap into the rocks the process of extracting the oil would be roughly $2-$3 per gallon causing the prices to again drop.

the oil companies can only hold the strangle if people let them. how many suvs to cars are now on the worlds roads and how many more airplanes are flying. is there gouging, you bet, but the world and politcal climate in the middle east make it very hard to not fear losing oil resources, so most pricing is fixed to that

You are right about alternative energy as an effective competitor!

IF you are curious--the "reason" the oil companies are giving is tat they have to curtail production at various refinerises as part of ftheir "annual spring maintainance" program. No kidding--that's their excuse!

We are doing maintenance on most of the refineries. This is needed to convert this from winter blends to summer blends.

You know what? I don't care! I drive an electric car. It costs me less than a penny per mile to drive around. I bought it used from eBay for only $2000. Here's a link to some other cheap electric vehicles:
