I was wondering if you can drive to any beaches from San Antonio (besides Corpus) - and if so, how long does it take to get there?

Try South Padre Island. It is a few miles east of Brownsville, TX accessible from Texas 100 highway just south of San Benito, Texas.

Great place to spend some time...but not necessarily during spring break when 85,000 kids strike all at once!

yes, plenty...depends on what you consider a good beach. Texas has plenty of coastline. If it's parties you are after, Port Aransas near Corpus Christi and South Padre Island near Harlingen or even Galveston near Houston. South Padre is very pretty and close to Mexico. It's about 6 hours from San Antonio. Galveston is about 4 hours away. Port A is another 1 hour drive from Corpus Christi. There are Schlitterbahns at both the Galveston and South Padre locations. There's Matagora Beach as well, supposed to be quieter and for bird watching. Have fun.

I'd second the previous entries on South Padre, Galveston, and Matagorda Island.

The lake northwest of San Antonio is Medina Lake, which is a nice lake, but not a beach in the sense you probably mean. It is a good recreational lake, as is Canyon Lake.

Padre is a very long island, and South Padre is very far to the south of Corpus. Plan on staying overnight somewhere nearby if you want to get some really quality beach time.

Another area favored for coastal recreation is Rockport-Aransas Pass. It's better known for salt-water fishing than beach recreation, but it's a very nice area.

The Gulf Coast isn't quite as clean as the Atlantic, but it does give Texas a good additional attraction in the form of a coastline.

You can probably get to the Galveston beach in about 5 hours. There is a lake northwest of San Antonio but I have never been to the beach at that lake.

Try going to Lake Travis in Austin...there are a lot of lakes that have decent beaches....but as far as salt-water the Corpus area is better than nothing....have you ever gone to Padre Island? it is nice (there is a fee since it is a national park).
