Alcohol, with a red dye to make it visible. Mercury isn't used any more because it freezes at attainable temperatures and is toxic.

MERCURY. The newer thermometers contain alcohol with a red dye. If it is silver it is mercury, if it is red, it is alcohol.

I believe it is liquid mercury

I belive it to be mercury with some coloring agent.

It might be mercury...usually its silver....not sure it the red colored substance is mercury too...
