In the northern hemisphere, day is longer than night during spring and summer, with the longest day occurring at the midpoint between the two seasons -- the first day of summer. Night is longer than day during autumn and winter, with the longest night occurring on the first day of winter.

At North Carolina’s latitude, the longest day is about 14.5 hours long, while the shortest day is about nine-and-a-half hours long. At the equator, day and night are essentially equal throughout the year.

Future exhibits will help visitors understand the cause of the Earth’s seasons and how they change the length of day and night that most people experience. An exhibit on the phases of the moon also is planned. Admission to Morehead Planetarium’s exhibits areas is free.

The planetarium’s exhibit areas and its Infinity Shop are open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9:30 p.m.; and Sunday through Friday from 12:30 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9:30 p.m. The planetarium is closed Monday nights.
