I know it's a big deal; I'm not an idiot. I just wonder why they bother to have them swear that they will when they know so many won't.

Some have a conscience and won't lie on the bible. Others who do lie and get caught will go to jail for swearing they will tell the truth and not doing just that.

lying in court is kinda a big deal?? Uh yeah, its called perjury; punishable of a fine up to 2000 and incarceration for up to 5 years. Believe it or not, people in America used to have a little something I like to call integrity. Now, you can still find this now a days but it is very few and far between.

If somebody is proven to have lied they can be charged of perjury. The only thing is that proving that someone lied is harder than said,so I agree with you that a lot of people do lie under oath.
