There are several theories behind the mechanisms of action involved, some include that when taken an increase in glucose consumption takes place. When such occurs the effect influences energy production through ATP which involves synthesis while also potentially influencing growth factors involved in plasticity such as BDNF, NGF and VGF. It is also postulated that aside from these trophic growth factor levels increasing, glutamate & choline levels are thought to be effected but not serotonin or dopamine.

In addition to other drugs of this classification such as aniracetam(acts more like an SSRI antidepressant) drinking green tea, fish oil, regular exercise, proper diet, meditation, B vitamins and proper sleep are also capable of increasing plasticity as well as associated growth factor levels
