Okay, I'll answer but I hope you're reading the book. I know it's hard to read so much so I'll help you out.

Sparknotes informs me that T.J. is arrested because people think he is responsible for the robbery. If I understand correctly, he really is part of the robbery along with two white boys who don't get arrested. Help any? Let me know...

JT robbed a store with the two white brothers he had been hanging out with (I forget their names). They were caught, but only JT was arrested, presumably because he was black. The white brothers claimed they were trying to stop him, not encouraging him like they actually were. The white store owner eventually died from his injuries during the robbery, so JT was going to take the rap for that as well.

The subplot about JT contrasts with the Logan children. They knew their place in their society, and, although they didn't agree with it, their parents were smart enough to play by the rules. JT stepped outside his place, assuming he was equal to white boys his age, and it almost got him lynched.
