It is a constant source of disturbance, frustration, disappointment, and misanthropy. I can't find it within me to truly care for, relate to, or enjoy the company of most human beings. General, most people are simply happy with living. They will float along but grabbing hold of the paddle and actually rowing is far too frightening, hard, and troublesome. I would propose that weakness, fear, and laziness are the major factors contributing to the mediocrity of mankind. We haven't particularly, within in our culture or society, adopted intellectuality as a virtue or value. Mostly, people are afraid of or find disdain for the intellectual. For the intellectual often challenges and attacks those institutions and dogmas which protect the insecurities of the masses, and because of these insecurities most people avoid an authentic life with all their will of ignorance. Living comfortably is living ignorantly, and living a lie is far more appeasing to the masses than living courageously - facing life head on and battling its challenges and absurdity. People insist on the inauthentic life, and people are constantly a puppet and prisoner of their own ignorance and idiocy: I can't but lose more and more sympathy and hope for mankind as my years add on.

You don't say what country you are actually referring to, but guess what? It could be pretty much any country in the world. A better question is: Are you disturbed by our world's seeming lack of intellect?"

Yes, I am!

The government has been working for decades now to dumb down the American people. It is infuriating watching how EASILY lead people are by the lies and deception of our leadership and media!
The West is becoming a product of brainwashing from TV and Hollywood and fast becoming the laughing stock of the human race - an embarrassment.
People are high on power and greed, ignorance and gluttony and MOST of you have NO IDEA!
Ask yourselves;
Why do we worship movie stars and TV stars and sports stars while scientists and philosophers and educators remain anonymous?
Why do our teachers get paid so little while insignificant, self-centred entertainers receive millions?
Why do the masses gorge themselves on idiotic shows like Big Brother, Wrestlemania and brainless prime-time dramas when there is so much important and relevant information out there that gets overlooked and delegated to the fringes?
Our society needs an enema!

I think the "dumbing down" of our culture is frightening.
I saw that there is now a game show where adults admit that they can't answer elementary education questions.
Our country used to pride itself on being the best and now it seems as if people think it is "cute" to be stupid, like Jessica Simpson, "chicken of the sea" b.s
The public education system seems to be more concerned with fairness instead of education. It may be politically incorrect, but there is nothing fair about life.
People have varying levels of intellect and abilities. We need to stop trying to make things fair and work for those at the top instead of those at the bottom.

Every society has things that are wrong with it, and on the grand scheme of things I believe we're better off than a lot of other countries.

Also, regarding a recent Gallup poll, more Americans are more educated today than ever before in history.

yes!!!!!

I get scared when I hear people rave on and on about Europe and Asia's amazing students. And how poorly we are doing in math and science as a nation, to the point where we need special initiatives to encourage people's intrest in school!
Its shameful!

yes-- ! the basic ability to think critically or just be interested in something other than the latest and greatest seems to be lacking. It drives me crazy, especially when it is people I am close with who display this!

Not so much as I am with our seemingly apathetic attitudes. Nobody seems to care much anymore, about anything. I wish people had a desire to be knowledgeable. Not I know everything genius smart, but smart enough to know how to be somewhat dignified within society.
