Personally, i believe it's between 3 guys - dirk, nash, and kobe. I can't really decide between them because arguments for each case are different. Dirk i would consider because he's been perennially good and now he's the best player on the best team. He doesn't stand out as much as nash or kobe, but you can't deny his team's record. Nash could win because he's better this year than his previous mvp years. Though enough has been said about nash. I want kobe to win just because he deserved it last year and this year he's been a much better all-around player.

And to answer your question of whether it should matter how well the team is doing...yes. Just because the player is good, means nothing if he doesn't help his team win. It's the reason why kobe didn't win last year and won't win this year. It's also the reason why dirk and nash are the frontrunners. They're not as talented as KG, kobe, iverson, or lebron, but unlike the 4 i just mentioned, dirk and nash have already figured out how to help their team win. If i had to bet on it, i'd say Nash gets his 3rd straight MVP.

Historically League MVP's have been on a very good regular season team. That would mean guys who put up superstar numbers on mediocre or bad teams can just forget about it. So I'm sure you won't hear Kevin Garnett or Paul Pierce. Also, teams who have two pretty good players who are comparable statwise will probably lose out (e.g. Houston with Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, or Denver with Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson).

This year, it seems like there will be a few contenders, and it's probably too early to call. Definitely Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash are probably the favorites at this point. I would say LeBron James could also get consideration, depending on how the Cavaliers finish out the season. Kobe Bryant would probably need his Lakers to win out all the rest of their games to be considered. The same would probably be true for someone like Gilbert Arenas. Both the Lakers and Wizards are swooning at the wrong time of the year. Everyone else who might reasonably be considered, in my opinion, is probably a dark horse candidate.

If I had to venture a guess though, I would say Steve Nash will end up with it.

Steve Nash, he makes his team better, while still be a clutch player, and a great player. No I in team, kobe loses and so does dirk in this case. they are important to there team, and easlily the best on their teams, they do not make their teammates better like Nash does. It is important to be on the a good team to win the MVP because i feel being the best player on a team is more than just scoring a lot of points. If the nets had won 50 games, Jason kidd would be in the running for the MVP but since they are haven't he has no chance and very little talk is being brought up. The keys to winning MVP, your stats, making your teammates better, and winning games.

This year it's Dirk. It's hilarious to watch people say Nash takes it over Dirk because of the one game Phoenix won vs. Dallas last week. Hello people, the season series is 2-1 in Dallas' favour.

Funny how no one was saying how Dirk can't finish when he drained that game-winner with 1.3 seconds left vs. Phoenix 1 game before. No one was calling Nash clutch when Dallas ran off 7 straight points to end their first meeting this season either.

In any case, Dirk is the most indispensable player on the 1st team in NBA history to run off 3 streaks of 12 games or more. I actually would've voted for Nash, until I saw Phoenix look weak against Philly w/o Shawn Marion. Apparently Nash might not be the only indispensable Sun lol

Dirk gets my vote this year.

vince carter or lebraun. lebraun or d wade shoulda won last year too. steve nash is overrated. an mvp only need make the most impact on his team and be a leader in stats and in the bringing in of fans to watch. It should be a combination of factors..... team did reasonable well, probably playoffs is sufficient, one of the stat leaders (top 5) in more than one category, and have an impact to his team.. ie make his team win more than they did witho9ut and involve his teammates.
