hi there! i have a 1988 olds delta 88 3.8 and i have this rattle in my exhaust.sounds like its coming from the intermediate pipe,and its been there for the past 4 yrs now,dont get any better,or worse.i was wondering,would a rusty pipe cause a rattle.i check it out all over,and no heat shield is loose or hitting the pipe,and all hangers and clamps are tight.these cars has heat shields from the front to the back.so that is what iam asking,if the pipe is rusty,would it make a rattle?thanks guys.

There is rust inside as well as outside. What you are hearing is the exhaust gas rattling its way throught the rusty pile inside. If you can, replace the muffler. Your car will run better and the gas mileage will probably go up, since you probably have some flow restriction.

Sounds like the baffles in the muffler inside has come loose and raddling when you drive
If you can get under the car and with a rubber hammer tap( do not hit) the muffler.
If it is in the inside it will raddle.

most of the time ,the old catalytics rattle.

the sound of the exhaust baffle plates..due to corrosion or poor exhaust work.. nothing else..
