My brother-in-law lives with me and my husband. He met a girl online a few months ago, yesterday she moved in with us.The only problem is...she only speaks spanish. When I first met her she said hola, and I said Hi and even then she looked confused. I want her to feel comftable in my home, but I don't really know what to say. Supposoly she can understand english. But the last couple days have been awkward. we haven't even spoke to eachother. What do I say???

she is important to you by association...your husband loves his brother - who has feelings for this woman. you aren't really in a position to eliminate her because she's already there...I would be super nice & try teaching her a word or two everyday. If things are really confusing or stressful for you, get someone to translate. Even I know basic Spanish. Either way, good luck and (most importantly!!) don't let it hurt your marriage!

It would be great if you tried to interact with her, use sign language and english, she can use sign language and spanish, you each could learn some of each language, develop a bond doing so, and eliminate the awkwardness within a couple days! She's probably pretty lonely with no one she can really talk to there, just start with asking if she wants some tea, or something, showing the cup and teabag, for example, and go from there!
Good luck!

Just be who you are and talk normally to and around her.... Be kind and hospitable to her and treat her as she is a guest and welcomed in your home. Find common interests with her and do things with her that she likes to do. you may want to have an interpretor come in and interpret for you at times as this may help. Good luck to you! See if she can write in English and if she can you can talk and she can write back what she wants or is trying to say to you in English so you can better understand each other. hope this helps some. I am sure this is frustrating and confusing for both you and her.

You should say :
Él debería encontrar un lugar agradable para ustedes ambos viviendo

Which means...
He should find a nice place for you both to live

Kidding, kinda lol

If you want to communicate with her, spend some time showing her English words, while she teaches you the Spanish word...might take a while but you won't be staring at each other like dorks lol

Are you sure she speaks English? Because I'm Mexican and I can tell u that is really hard for someone that doesn't know English to join with people who speak another languaje. You can try by asking her about programs in her country or music, or something that she knows!! If you need help with that u can contact me!!

Well if you don't know her name, you might want to start with "Como te llama?" That translates to "What's your name?"
Does your brother-in-law or husband speak spanish? If they met online, shouldn't she know how to speak a little english or vice-versa for your brother?

My advice would be to try and learn the language a little as well as maybe trying to teach her english. It could be a great bonding experience for both of you.
