Try a rescue society - you can find one locally at petfinder.com

I think the best thing to do is check the newspaper classifieds (or online classifieds), or go to tack stores, feed stores, and reputable stables (where the horses are well cared for). Tack shops and feed stores often have a board with listings of horses in the area. Employees of all those places may know of someone who has a horse that meets your needs.

If you are an experienced horse person you could adopt a horse from a shelter or horse rescue. Just remember that a lot of those horses haven't had a good life. But you can find some good horses that people didn't want anymore.

When you find a horse, groom it to see how it is to work around, ride it, and have the vet check it. (Sorry if you know this already!)

A cheap horse is cheap for a reason. Horses are valued about like cars. If you buy a car for $500 odds are it has problems that are costly to fix. Same holds true for horses. 2 questions: What do you intend to do with your horse? What is your budget? Leasing or a partial lease of a horse is a good way to limit costs and not get stuck in a financial bind. My recommendation is to connect yourself with a humble, honest horse professional who can help you find the right match for your needs. Unlike a car which you can put in a garage if money is tight, a horse costs money all the while you have it. The saying goes, "The cheapest part of owning a horse is buying it."

I'm always very wary of people who want to buy a horse which is cheap, for the following reasons:-

a) if they can't afford a reasonable, going price for a horse, then the chances are that they won't be able to afford to keep it properly.

b) they are usually pretty ignorant about horse management

c) if they do eventually get a 'cheap' horse it is quite likely to have something wrong with it, so (i) they wouldn't know how to deal with it, and (ii) they wouldn't be able to afford to deal with it.

WARNING to anyone selling horses - always ask the going price, check out it's future home beforehand, and don't be fooled by a sob story from a 'pony-mad' family.

Go to an auction. But beware, many people buy horses for cheap and end up selling them because they are dangerous and/or hard to handle or ride. I advise you invest in a good, friendly horse with 3 nice gaits, even if it costs more!!!!

Where do you live? I live in Ohio. We have registered quarter horses for sale. The younger ones don't have their papers gone through but the older ones have everything ready to go. We also have a paint. I'm not sure about her papers but paints aren't to hard to register. I could get ahold of the blood lines for you if you were interested as well as borrow my b/f's cam to take some pics.

go to a horse farm. i live/ work on one and we have horses for sale or know of people who are trying to sell their horses. speaking from experience, never buy a horse from an auction, unless it was an untouched untrained horse. a couple of websites agdirect.com, equine.com, horsetopia.com, just to name a few. hope this helps

Well, I got the 3 ponies in Arkansas for $300. That was 4 years ago though. I sold one for $1,000 b/c I trained it to jump. But if you are looking for Western- sorry I ride English(most english horses are expensive-trust me, i have 8).- most western horses may be sweat, and cheap, but pretty crapy.
